Possibly the hottest restaurant in Toronto at this moment, Grand Electric is dishing out Mexican eats and unique cocktails to crowds of people. And by crowds of people, I really do mean crowds…Erin and I lined up at this Parkdale spot 30 minutes prior to opening time…and we were not alone! The line ran down the block, at least 30 people deep, all anxious to snag a seat and enjoy some casual eats while listening to the hip-hop beats playing in this small spot.
This guac was top-notch! Perfectly seasoned and adorned with a crispy, salty chicarrone (fried pork skin) that Erin happily polished off, we were off to a good start. Dining with two other food-loving friends, we were all also loving the small bottles of various sauces and salsas sitting on the table. The cocktail of choice was also a table favorite. Do not fear the egg white…it added a frothy-ness to this drink that was quite enjoyable.
We started off with the tuna ceviche and spicy squid. And these turned out to be the favorite two dishes of the night. The tuna was fresh with just the right amount of acid, and the squid was sitting in this sauce that Erin described as “the best ketchup EVER!” And how could that ever be a bad thing?
The favorite taco of the night was hands down the beef. So tender and sweet, I wish I had ordered two of these! Don’t get me wrong, the fish and chicken were also good…but I think we all would have preferred the fish chopped into pieces and the chicken a little less spicy. One complaint…the food came out fast…we hadn’t even downed the last tortilla chip or devoured the last squid when all of our tacos appeared. I guess I understand with the throngs of people waiting…but a little break between courses would be nice.
Despite being stuffed from the barage of food, we saved room for this dessert. And I think we all even wished it was bigger! Fresh lime curd, and I mean FRESH, mixed with more FRESH whipped cream and a graham crust…this was the perfect end to a Mexican taco feast!
Bottom line: Go for the drinks, apps, gauc, and casual laid-back vibe. GET DESSERT! Tacos were standard fair. I could see this also being quite a delicious late night snack!
