The County General, Splendido’s more casual sibling, has been on my list for quite some time. Famous for its innovative twists on Southern comfort cuisine, I immediately fell in love with the vibe of this Queen West spot for its cottagy and homey feel…wooden tables and bars, blue checkered napkins, and clipboard menus…I was immediately relaxed and in the mood for good ol’ home-cookin.
Having read many a review about their fried chicken sandwich, my dining partners and I obviously had to order it to share. Served with fries and homemade ketchup, I think we were all just a tad underwhelmed. The chicken thigh itself was very tender with an extra crispy coating, but the fried exterior did not hold well to the meaty chicken interior and we were left with mouths full of either just skin or just meat. The condiments were fine, the bun was fine, but for a 15 dollar price tag for a small slider size sandwich, “fine” was not really all that I wanted. The fries were good, but (now all don’t shout at me at once), I’m not such a french fry gal…I’m sorry, they just don’t do it for me.
This was definitely unique, unexpected, and very delicious. Not your typical Mexican style fish tacos, the whole fish was cooked perfectly. So juicy and perfectly salty, I could have had just the fish alone. The green salsa, pickled veg, guacamole, and remaining taco side-kicks all went perfectly with the succulent fish and corn tortillas. A very fun, interactive, and flavorful dish I would definitely recommend. But again, I felt the 40 dollar price tag (for two) was a tad steep for the offering.
Bottom Line: Very homey and comfortable atmosphere. Seems like it would be a good brunch bet (I’ve yet to try it). Ifyou don’t mind being slightly over-charged, visit for interesting, unique, and tasty twists on Southern comfort food.
