How To: Quick and Healthy Everyday Breakfast

Breakfast is by far my favourite meal of the day. While I do enjoy a nice lunch and delicious dinner and even the odd brunch, it’s the early morning meal that really does it for me.

Sitting down to my steaming mug of coffee and giant bowl of cereal while catching up on my blog and newspaper reading is something I look forward to every weekend. But who has the time for this leisurely lounging during the busy work week? Not I, that’s for sure! So in an effort to fill that void of my treasured breakfast weekend routine, I discovered that a little prep work the night before can let you enjoy a healthy and comforting breakfast, even during the busiest of rush hour mornings.

Overnight oatmeal is just oats soaked overnight in a mixture of yogurt and milk. After sitting in the fridge overnight, the oats soak up all the liquid and become thick and chewy. The best part is you can customize the bowl however you like it. I prefer Greek yogurt and almond milk for their richness, but you can use any yogurt and milk that you like. And then the toppings and add-ins are endless!

Overnight Oatmeal

Serves 1
Prep time 7 minutes
Meal type Breakfast


  • 1/3 cup Rolled oats
  • 1/2 Banana (chopped)
  • 1 Tbsp Raisins, dried cranberries, or any other dried fruit you enjoy
  • 1/3 cup Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla)
  • 1/3 cup Milk (Cows, Almond, Soy)
  • 1/2-1 Tbsp Jam of your choice
  • 1/2-1 Tbsp Peanut Butter (or any other nut butter you like)
  • 1/2 cup Berries or other fruit of your choice


You can customize this delicious breakfast to suite your tastes-- Add some honey or maple syrup if you like it sweeter, some cinnamon to spice it up, top with some granola in the morning for added crunch, or just leave plain and simple.


Place oats, raisins, and banana in a tupperware
Add yogurt and milk and mix until combined. If you like it a bit less thick, add some more milk.
3. Top with peanut butter, jam, berries, or any other fun toppings of your choice!
4. Place in fridge over night. Give it a quick stir in the morning and enjoy!

These cold and creamy oats are the perfect warm weather breakfast meal that will get your busy work day off to the right start!

    • 1/3 cup of oats and about 1/3 cup each of yogurt and milk for one serving. If you find it a bit too thick, just add some more milk. Enjoy!

  2. Anything involving oats is a winner in my book! And I could (and sometimes do….) eat breakfast for lunch or dinner. Favorite meal no matter the time of day!

    • I normally use the 10-15 minutes oats. I have tried it with quick oats and it’s good, but the texture is not as firm/chewy so I prefer the rolled oats. Let me know what you think!
