In order to fill our bellies with food that satisfies and tastes good, we’re always sure to have our favourites on-hand.
In this case, we’re talking snack food!
Let’s say it’s 9pm and you absolutely NEED a piece of chocolate. Or you’ve turned on Netflix and MUST have a bowl of popcorn to accompany your binge watching (side note: if you haven’t yet watched Life in Pieces, stop whatever it is you are doing and turn it on NOW. It’s freaking hilarious!)
Today, we’re opening our pantry doors to share some of our favourite everyday snack foods (brands included!). This is the stuff we always keep around to satisfying our cravings. And by no means do you have to eat what we eat – you do you! But perhaps this list will inspire you to try something new, or at the very least encourage you to have delicious and satisfying snacks on hand at all times.
Being able to satisfy your food cravings without guilt or a sense of urgency (as in, you eat a whole package of *insert whatever snack food you think you shouldn’t have* because you have limited access to it) is a crucial component of having a happy and healthful relationship with food. And that, is what we want for everyone!
So without delay, here are…
Our Favourite Everyday Snack Foods!
Dara
Kraft all natural peanut butter
I may or may not go through a jar of peanut butter a week. And by that I mean yes, yes I do go through a jar of peanut butter a week. But to be fair, there are four of us in my household who pretty much eat peanut butter for breakfast every single day. And this is by far and away my favourite brand (and I’ve been around the peanut butter block once or twice). It’s just peanuts, so it actually tastes like peanuts. But it also has FLAVOUR! And the texture – the perfect spreadable consistency. Just last week it went on sale at my neighbourhood grocery store, so now I’m set for at least the next month.
Mary’s crackers
The reason I like these crackers is the same reason I buy many of my pantry items these days – the kids like them. That and they just taste really good. Now, we have a great recipe for how to make your own version, but when you don’t have the time or desire to do that, these always have a spot in my pantry. I love snacking on them plain, dipping with hummus, or topping with cheese.
President’s Choice trail mix
Again, you could make your own. But there’s something about this mix. It’s like the perfect ratio of nuts to seeds to raisins. It’s by far and away my go-to work snack come 2 or 3 pm. I bring a bag and leave it in the desk drawer, or you could portion out a couple tupperware full at the beginning of the week so your afternoon snacks are done! #mealprepforthewin
Kurly Korn Slim and Trim Popcorn
I absolutely positively HATE the name of this popcorn. But I let it slide because it is so darn tasty! It’s perfectly oiled and salted making it addictive in the absolutely best way possible. Kind of like movie theatre popcorn, but a million times better. Trust me.
Lindt 70% Dark Chocolate
I was never really a chocolate girl, until I discovered this chocolate. I think my problem was most chocolate was a little too sweet or just didn’t taste like, well, chocolate. Now don’t get me wrong, the Halloween candy disappeared FAST in our house, but when I need a serious chocolate fix, I love this rich and dark bar. If that’s not your thing, I get it. Go for the variety you like. But if you’re looking for the good stuff, this is it.

Neal Brothers Blue Corn Tortilla Chips with Flax Seed
My supermarket runs out of these all the time and it’s so frustrating because nothing comes close. These aren’t just a vehicle for flavour, they’re legit packed with their own. If you have salsa or hummus or a favourite dip to serve alongside, great! But if not, I promise you don’t need it. Bonus: Neal Brothers is a Canadian company!
President’s Choice Black Label Tomatillo Salsa
If you are going to choose a salsa, here’s the one. As far as tomato salsas go, I prefer the fresh stuff. This is my favourite jarred salsa hands down. It’s smokey, zesty, a little bit spicy and can almost fool you into thinking you’re tasting a fresh salsa verde. Also, it’s green. So that’s fun!
Goldfish crackers
Original Cheddar flavour only. These aren’t just for kids. In fact, Julia Child herself served these at dinner parties for guests to munch on before the meal. I don’t think there’s any better endorsement than that, so I’ll end it there.
Natural Delights Medjool Dates
We heavily favour salty snacks in the MacGregor household, so we rarely have much sweet stuff on hand. Like Dara, Lindt dark chocolate is one my favourites, but I usually go for the version with added sea salt (go figure!) or chilis for that spicy kick at the end. What we do always have on hand are Medjool Dates. These are the crème de la crème of dates. They have a soft, satisfying texture, they taste like caramel, they’re portable and they’re a legitimately healthful option. Also, they’re a perfectly kid-sized snack and my 2 year old is obsessed.
No Name popcorn kernels
We also love popcorn in this house. I’m happy to buy a bag of pre-made, especially Chicago style or white cheddar Smartfood, but my husband loves making it on the stovetop himself and I’ll never say no to the fresh stuff. He’ll often do staight-up movie style and top with melted butter and salt, but more recently he’s been favouring the addition of lots of freshly ground pepper and lime zest. So. Good. (And seriously so easy. And way cheaper than buying it popped!)
Now tell us, what other snacks foods do we need to stock our pantries with?
