We’ve had this idea stuck in our heads for a while now.
While recreating crispy deep fried chicken wings at home would be AWESOME, it’s not exactly our style. We generally like to leave deep frying to the professionals.
But y’all know we love our tofu here at How to Eat. Especially when it comes to adapting classic meat dishes!
(See our General Tso Tofu, Tofu Bahn Mi, Tofu Lettuce Wraps for more tofu-y goodness).
So when Litehouse Foods asked us to create a recipe using their ranch dressing, it was the perfect opportunity to make our buffalo tofu “wings” dream a reality. Because what goes better with buffalo wings than ranch dipping sauce? Nada.
Sure, you could make your own ranch dipping sauce. In fact, we have a version right here.
But lets be real. A working mom trying to feed her family a three course, everything-made-from-scratch feast is just not happening on a busy Wednesday night.
Sitting down for dinner with a “half-homemade” meal the whole family can eat together? That, is achievable.
This dressing is really darn delicious. It’s found in the refrigerated produce section that we’ve always referred to as the ‘fancy dressing’ sections. It’s also conveniently located near the celery, which is absolutely mandatory in the making of any sort of buffalo wing sauce dish.
Now let’s talk about these wings, shall we? Instead of a trip in the deep fryer, these tofu “wings” crips up with the help of a spicy cornstarch batter and the high heat of your oven. Similar to our buffalo cauliflower, they are then tossed with a spicy mixture of hot sauce and melted butter to give you those inevitable saucy ‘chicken wing’ fingers. This is a no cutlery zone.
This Litehouse ranch dressing is the perfect fresh tasting dip to cool things down, and is a dynamite contrast to the spicy ‘wings’. So get ready to dunk away and make sure to serve ’em up with lots and lots of napkins.
And a cold beer wouldn’t hurt either.

Buffalo Tofu “Wings”
Serves | 2-4 |
Prep time | 20 minutes |
Cook time | 25 minutes |
Total time | 45 minutes |
Dietary | Vegetarian |
Meal type | Main Dish, Snack |
Ingredients
- 1 Block extra firm tofu
- 6 Tbsp hot sauce (divided)
- 3 Tbsp canola oil
- 2 Tbsp cornstarch
- 2 Tbsp butter (melted)
- jar Litehouse Ranch Dressing (for dipping)
Note
These buffalo tofu "wings" are best served hot, right out of the oven. If you make them ahead, they can be reheated in the oven at 400 for about 5-10 minutes. You can definitely eat leftovers cold or room temperature, they will just have a chewier texture.
Directions
1. | Preheat oven to 425 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. |
2. | Slice tofu into 1 cm wide slices. You should get 10-11 slices. On a flat surface, arrange tofu on top of 2 layers of paper towel or a clean kitchen towel. Top with another 2 layers of paper towel or kitchen towel. Cover with a baking sheet and something heavy like a dutch oven or a few canned goods. Drain tofu like this for at least 15 minutes. |
3. | Meanwhile, in a small bowl whisk together canola oil, 4 tbsp hot sauce, and cornstarch. Transfer sauce to a large shallow baking dish. |
4. | Cut each piece of tofu on the diagonal so it is triangle shaped. Transfer tofu triangles to baking dish, flipping each piece so it is well coated in the sauce (sauce should be thick enough to coat each piece like a batter). Transfer the battered tofu to the parchment lined baking sheet. |
5. | Bake for 25 minutes, flipping half way through, until browned on the edges and crispy. |
6. | In a large bowl, mix together melted butter and remaining 2 tbsp hot sauce. When tofu is done baking and still hot, toss with the butter and hot sauce mixture. Serve immediately with Litehouse Ranch Dressing for dipping. |
