I’ve got something very exciting for you today – our first tofu recipe of 2019. Cue the fireworks.
As the self-proclaimed “Tofu Queens of The World Toronto”, I can confidently say that this one is a winner. Our Buffalo Tofu is top notch and our General Tso’s Tofu is kind of amazing, but this here Sweet and Spicy Crispy Baked Tofu is a thing of beauty.
I’ve used our fool-proof method for making crispy tofu in the oven, the magical combination that is canola oil and cornstarch. Once this mixture is poured over the tofu triangles and baked in the oven, it comes out crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. You could use extra-firm tofu here and I was once an extra-firm tofu believer. But recently, I’ve been converted to the firm side and here’s why: texture, texture, texture. If you want that contrast of crisp and soft, go with firm all the way.
I should add a PSA here: You are going to want to eat that baked crispy tofu as is. But stop yourself. Because then we add a sweet and spicy sauce, not unlike our Sesame Cauliflower Bites. And that my friends is when the magic happens.
Now you may dig in!

Sweet and Spicy Crispy Baked Tofu

Meal type | Appetizer, Main Dish, Snack |
Ingredients
- 1 397 gram package firm tofu
- 1 Tbsp corn starch
- 1 Tbsp canola oil
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp ketchup
- 1 Tsp sesame oil
- 1/2 Tsp sriracha (or more to taste)
- chopped green onions, parsley or cilantro (to garnish)
Note
These tofu triangles are great on their own, tossed in a salad, or served alongside some rice or noodles. If you like things a little spicy, add an extra squeeze or two of sriracha.
Directions
1. | Preheat oven to 400 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. |
2. | Pat tofu dry lightly with paper towel to remove water. Cut crosswise into 8 slices and then cut each slice in half on a diagonal. You should have 16 triangles. |
3. | Place tofu on baking sheet, evenly spreading them out. In a small bowl mix together corn starch and canola oil and pour over tofu, carefully coating them all. Place in the oven and bake for 25 minutes, flipping halfway through. |
4. | In the meantime, mix together honey, soy sauce, ketchup, sesame oil, and sriracha in a small bowl. Once tofu is done, remove from oven, turn heat up to 450 degrees and pour honey mixture over top, turning each tofu piece so they are evenly coated. |
5. | Place the tofu back in the oven for another 5-10 minutes until excess sauce is bubbly and tofu is brown and crispy. Remove and top with green onions, parsley or cilantro, if desired. |
